SWITCHING FROM OIL TO GAS
Why switch to natural gas from fuel oil?
Natural Gas is now plentiful since the the use of fracking for natural gas became prevalent. Between oil, propane, wood and other source of fuel natural gas makes the most sense unless you do not have access to it. A decade ago, natural gas cost about 80 percent of the equivalent Btu of fuel oil but now it now costs less than half of oil. America’s boom in natural gas drilling has kept gas prices low and there is lots of gas. Right here in the Northeast alone there is a large bed of gas stretching from New York State to Virginia.
We believe cheap natural gas is here to stay for a while because it would take time for the demand to meet up with the supply. For natural gas to increase in price, natural gas would have to be liquefied for it to be exported and ships built to transport it, trucks for transporting goods would have to be replaced to enable it to run on natural gas, plus manufacturing from abroad would have to come here to take advantage of the cheaper source of power. Only then would the increase in demand of natural gas meet up with the supply if at all. That is why it pays now to convert to natural gas heating from oil in order to take advantage the natural gas price compared to the price of fuel oil.
If you are still using oil to heat your home or business it is because the oil delivery company makes you believe that using oil is the best and the greatest or that you do not have readily available access to natural gas. If you are using an oil steam boiler it can be converted to gas. An oil hot water boiler can also be converted to gas. Converting an oil furnace with air conditioning to natural gas can also be done with an even greater payback.
With steam boilers, if it is still in good condition the heat ex-changer and combustion chamber can just be cleaned and the burner converted to gas. The same thing can be said to convert a hot water boiler from oil to gas, just replace the oil burner to a gas burner. You may also replace an old steam or hot water oil boiler outright if it is not efficient enough compared to today’s efficiency standards. This will allow the oil to gas conversion to pay for itself quicker through not just from the lower cost of natural gas compared to oil, but also through additional savings from higher efficiency. And after the appliances or equipment pays for itself through this oil to gas conversion, money being lost from heat escaping up the chimney can now be used for other things rather than wasted.
Residents of areas where there is no natural gas piping could be lead by their plumbers or HVAC installers to believe that their only choice might be propane or wood burning stoves aside from fuel oil. This might be because people that service the HVAC/R industry do not know any better themselves and recommend only what they do know. This might make you install heating that is too expensive or to dirty to operate unless you find out about other alternatives. Other alternatives by the way, from our perspective are based on fuel-less heating systems in which we cover under Alternative Heating.
Why convert to natural gas from using fuel oil or propane (liquefied petroleum gas)? Natural gas is cheaper than oil. Propane is also more expensive than natural gas because like oil it has to be delivered by truck unlike gas that is piped. Plus why take a chance on a propane delivery when you do not know exactly how much propane was delivered? There was an instance at one time where a propane company that serviced Sussex County in New Jersey billed a 400 gallon propane delivery to my summer home when it was not even delivered. Fuel oil delivery can also be tampered with. We have been to customers homes in Hudson, Passaic and Bergen County, NJ where when we serviced their oil boiler or furnaces the fuel oil was so unusually dirty that the fuel being supplied to their furnace was not cranberry colored anymore, but black instead. It looked like regular fuel oil was mixed with waste oil. Sometimes with fuel oil delivery you never know for sure that what you are getting is not contaminated with waste oil or carcinogens. Converting to natural gas heating from fuel oil or propane is the answer if you want to continue utilizing fossil fueled steam, hot water, or a furnace consisting of forced air with or without air conditioning.
When converting from oil to gas, have someone that can adequately assess your situation rather than just install equipment without a good knowledge of energy efficiency. This person should be trained in HVAC and is able to present several options or alternatives to discuss with you. If the final outcome of this assessment leads to converting to natural gas from fuel oil, then this installation should be done properly. This means by taking into consideration mistakes from the previous installation causing improper operation if any, fuel delivery, leakage, under or over capacity, etc. All of these problems should then be addressed with, not merely transferred over to the new installation.
Today's heating and cooling equipment not only provides better efficiency but also deliver advancement in comfort. Some feature variable speed air handlers with slow ramp-up of speed when cooling or heating and dual stage burners while others deliver no-frill heating. There are also thermostats made for dual stage burners plus control over the internet and so on. It is best to make sure that the HVAC technician who will making your conversion from oil to gas is NATE certified. North American Technician Excellence certification is considered to be the finest in the HVACR industry.

When it comes to hot water boilers we like to install this Burnham “Consumer Digest Best Buy” boiler. We also like Navien hot water on demand appliances and condensing boilers.
When older oil boilers are converted to gas the yield in savings is tremendous. This old oil boiler that also supplied hot water for this condominium was guzzling ten thousand dollars of fuel oil a year. Mouse over the pictures to see differences between the two boilers before and after conversion.
When it was converted to natural gas with tank-less water heaters, the owners could not believe that their hot water bill dropped to only 30 dollars a month.
The Weil McLain steam boilers shown above belong to a church. The one on the left is a gas boiler that replaced a leaking oil boiler and on the right is an oil boiler that was cleaned and converted to gas utilizing a commercial grade Carlin gas burner capable of producing 1 million Btu's.
This boiler is from an Apartment Building in Jersey City that was converted to gas from oil. The photo behind it shows an oil boiler that was rusted internally and was leaking water badly. We patched it up temporarily so that it could get by the winter. In the summertime we arranged for the Utility Company to install a gas meter with adequate supply and converted our customer to gas from oil with a commercial grade Peerless Gas Boiler. We find the means to salvage a bad situation into one that saves money, adds value, and with a long-term fix.
